Mike's Thoughts: GT Game (defense)

The Hurricanes (3-1) defeated Georgia Tech by the score of 42-36 today. Read on to get CanesTime's Mike Bakas' take on Miami's defensive performance in the game.

• The defense gave up over 400 yards of offense but if you take away the blown play that resulted in the long Georgia Tech pass play in the second half, they played pretty well. They tackled well. They made several plays behind the line of scrimmage. They made the key stops when they needed to. They got better as the game wore on. That was, clearly, their best performance of the season.

• The defensive ends are the types of players who should do well against teams like Georgia Tech. Anthony Chickillo was all over the place making plays in the running game. Shayon Green was solid. They're not tremendous pass rushers but they are very tough, physical, disciplined, and played really well today.

Corey King has come a long way. He was a late signee, didn't play a down last season, missed spring with an injury, and then was buried on the depth chart to start the season. Now, in the fourth game of the season, he's playing a major role and was on the field late in the game whenever Miami needed a stop.

Denzel Perryman wasn't missed nearly as much as I thought he'd be. He's a very good player but the way the younger guys filled in for him makes you wonder how much better he is than those guys. Give Coach D and Coach Barrow some credit for getting guys like Thurston Armbrister and especially Tyrone Cornileus ready to play such solid games on that side of the ball.

• Losing Dalton Botts didn't end up hurting but let's hope he's not out very long. Sprained ankles can be tricky sometimes. He's one of the top few players on the entire team and getting him back will be key down the stretch.
