UM Football Blog: 10/2

A lot is happening in Coral Gables as the Canes prepare for Notre Dame this week. Here are some news and notes from today.

* Gionni Paul got his first career start against North Carolina State at middle linebacker. He finished with 11 tackles and caused a fumble. With Denzel Perryman back in the mix, Paul is now competing with Tyrone Cornileus this week to see who will be the third starter at linebacker.

* Nantambu Fentress is getting reps because of the amount of injuries UM has had at linebacker. He's done well, too. "He got 30 reps and made 5 tackles," said Mark D'Onofrio. The walkon linebacker will continue to see action, despite the return of Perryman and Rapheal Kirby to the lineup.

* Olsen Pierre has been limited in practice this week and his status for Saturday's game is unclear. If he's unable to play, freshman Dequan Ivery will likely be added to the rotation.

* Hunter Wells was added to the depth chart this week, listed as Malcolm Bunche's backup at left tackle. "I don't know if he'll be ready by Saturday," Golden said, also noting that Seantrel Henderson can play both tackle spots and guard Jonathan Feliciano can also play right tackle. Benjamin Jones, last week's starter at right tackle, isn't expected to play Saturday due to injury.

* Backup OL Jermaine Johnson is not with the team this week for personal reasons. Coach Golden didn't want to discuss details but it seems like he won't travel to Chicago with the team this weekend.
