With his high school squad still in the Louisiana 4A state playoffs, Gerald Willis has put his recruitment on the back burner, for now at least.
The 6-3 260-pound standout from Edna Karr High School has helped guide his team to a perfect 12-0 record so far in the season. Willis explained that he was happy when his recruitment settled down a little bit, so that his focus could be directed on his junior campaign.
"Before the season started it was kind of crazy," said Willis. "When the season started it settled down a lot. They aren't really reaching out to me as much right now. A lot of the schools have offered me, so they are leaving it at that right now."
One school that has already extended an offer to the five-star for the Class of 2014 is LSU. Being that Willis is from New Orleans, Frank Wilson has taken on the task of recruiting the standout defensive end to Baton Rouge. Willis explained that he hears from LSU on a regular basis and one coach in particular.
"Everything is good with LSU," said Willis. "I just saw coach Frank Wilson at my school and talked to him a little bit about life and football. Everything with them is cool right now."
Willis has been able to build a great relationship with Wilson, something that only one other SEC coach truly shares with Willis.
"My relationship with Coach Wilson is good," said Willis. "My dad and him went to the same high school and he used to coach at our rival high school. He is very close with my high school coach because he is from the same area. I know Coach Wilson really well. His relationship and the relationship I have with my recruiter from Florida are more personal."
With his high school team having so much success on the field this fall, Willis said that he hasn't had a chance to visit all of the schools on his list. One of the schools he did have a chance to check out this fall was LSU. While visiting LSU seems routine for someone from Louisiana, Willis said that he has a great time on every visit to Baton Rouge.
"I really haven't had a chance to take many visits because of my high school season," said Willis. "Every school that I've wanted to visit I've been to so far, except USC. I went to the South Carolina game and Alabama at LSU, and it was a great experience both times.
"It was just the same ole same ole. Every time I go up there they treat me like royalty. I just like getting to go and watch the game and hang out with other recruits on the field and things like that."
Willis and fellow Edna Karr standout Devante "Speedy" Noil, have also discussed the possibility of playing together at the next level. Willis explained that it is something they would love to be able to do, if they are both comfortable with the same school.
"We have talked about going to the same school and stuff," said Willis. "I would love to go to the same school as Speedy, if we are both comfortable there. We won't force it, but we would love to go to the same school."
After taking some visits this fall to several college campuses, Willis explained that he has a top four of Florida, LSU, USC and Texas A&M. Willis also had plenty to say about each school.
LSU: "It's close to home and I know some guys that play there. I know Coach Frank Wilson well. A lot of the guys there are guys I played against in high school. Their D-Line coach [Brick Haley] is great and their defensive line is the heart of their team. I would love to be a part of that and play there."
Florida: "The coaches told me that I am one of the top players in the nation and they are looking for a defensive end to come in right away and play. They said I was that guy for them."
USC: "I don't really know a lot about USC. Their coach always keeps in touch with me and tells me I'm big time. It's just USC, I guess. I'm going to try to visit there."
Texas A&M: "I like A&M because they start freshmen. I know a guy that plays there as a freshman and I think if he could do it, then so could I. It's just a good program.
