The Sierra (Calif.) College defensive standout had the type of season that drew national interest as he put in 17 sacks off the edge. He knew it had nearly peaked when the Hurricanes offered in late November. He then set up an official visit for early December, mulling a commitment ever since.
Then the Canes staff made it a point to see him, just to make sure everything was on track.
"Yesterday, coach [Al] Golden and Coach [Jethro] Franklin came by," he said. "It had a piece of the deal that was one of the things that almost sealed it."
Less than 24 hours later, Bond committed to "The U" via a phone call to Golden.
"Right when I called him and I told him I committed, he was happy and yelling," he said. "He was out with his family and was really excited. Coach Franklin was excited…I talked to all the coaches. They're excited to bring me in to make an impact."
Everything about the Miami program stood out to the 6-foot-3, 230-pounder.
"Before I went there, I had talked to Coach Franklin for a long time about what I wanted to do," Bond recalled. "I wanted to go down there and see what it was, see how the players were like.
"The facilities, they were nice," he continued. "The coaching staff was, and they have high goals for themselves next year. It's just where I wanted to be."
The staff envisions him coming off the edge just as he did so successfully in 2012.
"I can come in early as a pass-rusher and play," said Bond. "They see me as a rush-end, when I get there I will be around 240 (pounds). I will still do some dropping back like a linebacker, too."
The Californian is satisfied with his decision, though he still has a couple of months before signing day since he's a Spring graduate.
"I'm done with the visits. I'm done," he reiterated.
As far as the distance from home, he wasn't worried about it from the beginning.
"It's about as far as you could go," Bond said with a laugh. "At the end of the day, it was the best place for me. When I went there, it wasn't too much different. When I was there, I talked to Asante Cleveland, he's from Sacramento too. We talked about that.
"It's fine, I'll be perfectly fine there."
Bond has three seasons to play two beginning in the fall.
