Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna Prep defensive end Joe Jones has been picking up interest from the new Kentucky staff and plans to visit the Wildcats in the new year.
"They told me they're going to evaluate me the next few weeks and want me to come up there for an official visit after the dead period, sometime in January," Jones said.
The 6-foot-4, 235-pound Jones is coming off a junior season which saw him record 68 tackles, 21 tackles for loss and 13 sacks. He earned a spot in the Broward County all-star game, where he got to spend some time with a future Wildcat.
"I don't know much about Kentucky yet," Jones said, "but my friend Alvonte Bell, we got to talk during the Broward all-star game, and he was telling me how much he liked Kentucky and the new coaches."
Asked what Mark Stoops' staff has told him so far, Jones said: "They like how I get off the ball and cause a lot of problems in the backfield. They think I have a chance to play a lot and help them out."
Jones took an unofficial visit to Florida State in the summertime and got to know the defensive staff at that time. They have continued to track his progress, on and off the field. Some analysts suggest he'd have a much longer offer sheet if his academic status was already clear. He's optimistic about that situation, and interest has picked up considerably in the last few weeks.
Kansas and Buffalo are other possible official visits. Clemson, Oklahoma, Michigan, Illinois, N.C. State, Wake Forest, Ole Miss and Mississippi State may also get into the mix.
"I'm looking for a place where I can come in and make a difference," Jones said, "a place that has a great atmosphere and a place where I fit in and get better both as a player and academically."
