Early Look: 2014 Recruiting -- LB's

The 2014 recruiting class is loaded with quality prospects. CanesTime's Mike Bakas takes a look at what might lie ahead for the Hurricanes.

Currently: The Hurricanes return two seniors (Tyrone Cornileus and Jimmy Gaines), one junior (Denzel Perryman), four sophomores (Eddie Johnson, Thurston Armbrister, Gabe Terry, and Raphael Kirby), and one redshirt freshman (Jawand Blue).

2013 Class: Miami has one commitment right now -- Alex Figueroa -- and he's already enrolled in school. The Canes are hoping to close with five-star Matthew Thomas and three-star Jermaine Grace on Wednesday.

2014: With the departure of Gionni Paul, the Canes probably needed to sign four linebackers in this year's class. The number now appears to be three, and it could be down to two on Wednesday. Either way, look for this position to remain a priority in the 2014 class.

There are several quality prospects in-state but three to watch especially closely are Kain Daub, Dillon Bates, and Vincent Jackson.

Daub (6-3/230) is widely considered the state's top linebacker prospect for next year. The Jacksonville Sandalwood standout made an early commitment to LSU but backed off that recently. The Canes have offered, and are one of many schools he's considering.

Bates (6-2/225) is the son of former Tennessee Vol and Dallas Cowboy Bill Bates. The Ponte Vedra standout is big, fast, and physical. Miami has already offered, along with 20 others, but the Vols will be tough to beat in the end.

Jackson (6-2/225) is considered one of the top players in the greater Tampa area. The Jesuit High standout has several offers, including one from Miami. Florida will be tough to beat but the Canes are involved early.

If you start looking at out-of-state prospects, one of the first guys to look at is Montgomery (Alabama) Carver High standout Shaun Hamilton. At 6-foot-1 and 220 pounds, Hamilton has an offer from Miami and has expressed some early interest. Alabama has not offered but if they do, things will become very tough for Miami and everyone else.
