Cards sign explosive DE Stacy Thomas

Miami Gulliver Prep defensive end Stacy Thomas joined University of Louisville's 2013 recruiting class when he signed with the Cardinals on Sunday. Gulliver Prep head coach Earl Sims spoke with Cardinal Authority and provided some insight into the latest addition to U of L's already impressive recruiting class.

University of Louisville football added another to the 2013 recruiting class on Sunday when Miami Gulliver Prep defensive end Stacy Thomas signed with the Cardinals.

Thomas (6'3, 235) is rated as a three-star prospect and ranks among the nation's top 100 defensive ends by

"Stacy is a very good player," Gulliver Prep head coach Earl Sims told Cardinal Authority. "He's extremely explosive and has great acceleration. He has high play-making capabilities."

Thomas, who registered over 20 tackles for a loss during his final two seasons, was also a productive member of the Gulliver Prep offense.

"He's a very skillful player," said Sims. "He also played on the offensive side of the ball for us at wide receiver, so he has a great skill set."

Sims views Thomas as a future Cardinal with a ton of upside.

"I think they got an overall great player," he said. "He has a lot of potential to do some good things there."

While Thomas collected an impressive list of scholarship offers, many of those options disappeared as National Signing Day approached. Not wanting to make a rush decision, Thomas continued to evaluate his choices before signing with the Cardinals on Sunday.

"He had a lot of offers, but things really slowed down as places started to fill up when signing day came," explained Sims. "After signing day, some spots became available. He didn't want to rush into anything and phone calls really started to roll in following signing day. He continued to take his time and took his visits."

"I believe Louisville was his favorite before signing day, so it seems like everything came full circle for him."

Sims credits Louisville's ongoing recruiting successes in the Sunshine State as part of the high interest Thomas had in the Cardinal program.

"They have a huge interest in South Florida, as far as with the recruiting cycles. That's an up and coming program. Coach Strong, Coach Hurtt and Coach Bedford are all guys from the Florida area and they've had success with that program that Coach Strong has built there and I think it's something that interested Stacy very much."

Thomas becomes the eighth member of the 2013 recruiting class from Florida.
