Yeargin believes Notre Dame could be next
Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) University School linebacker Richard Yeargin III is hoping to hear some good news from the Irish in the near future. "Notre Dame is close to offering, I believe," Yeargin said. "I talked to Coach [Tony] Alford on the phone this weekend, and I think they are just crossing their "t's" and dotting their "i's" and then they'll pull the trigger on offering me." Though Yeargin doesn't plan on disclosing his final decision until next year's national signing day, he says a few schools are standing out. "My top schools right now are Clemson, Florida, Georgia Tech, Tennessee and Notre Dame, but not in that particular order," Yeargin said. "That list could change in the future. I'm open and willing to talk to anyone that wants to talk with me. I think I'm a big time player, so if you want to talk with me, I welcome it, and if not, that's okay. The earlier you jump on my bandwagon, the better you will be on my mind." In fact, Yeargin has an exact plan he intends to follow that will get him to next February. "I have about 17 or 18 offers right now, but this spring I'll probably pick up a few more," he said. "So, after this spring, I'll pull and plug my list and have 20 schools I'm focusing on. This summer, I'll narrow it to 10, and during the season I'll get it to five. I'll take all my official visits, narrow it down to three, and then play the hat game on signing day." Until then, Yeargin says he'll focus on improving his mental approach to the game. "I need to improve at being a student of the game and breaking down film, as well as seeing what schemes I fit best into," he said. "I need to see tendencies in opponents. I also need to improve on my read steps and how quickly I get to the quarterback." The 6-foot-4, 225-pound linebacker breaks down his flexible list of an early top five: Clemson – "I like how it's a small town. I had a great visit there last time and they have awesome facilities. They were one of the first schools to offer me. I really like Coach Venables." Florida – "The Gators are in the SEC, and it's kind of hard to turn down Florida when you live here. But, I have a lot of opportunities coming my way, so I need to open my eyes and see what else is out there. I do know I would like to compete in the SEC or ACC." Georgia Tech – "It's a great school, and they give you an education that sets you up for life after football. I could play right away. The coaches have embraced me. I'll probably visit there again in the summer." Notre Dame – "It has education, religion and tradition. They have the all-in-one package. I'm 6'4" right now, but I'm not done growing. I'll probably get up to 6'5" or 6'6", so in Notre Dame's scheme I would play defensive end, too." Tennessee – "I honestly don't know too much about them, but I just like the relationship I've developed with the coaching staff. They are doing a good job of recruiting." Yeargin plans to visit Florida for the Gators' spring game and Miami for spring practice. Florida State, UMass, and N.C. State are the latest schools to enter the picture, all extending offers this past week..
