Q&A with Raphael Kirby

Raphael Kirby is a former four-star recruit out of Georgia, and he's already earned a starting spot on Miami's defense. Read on to see what he was saying at today's practice.

Q: Expectation for the season and the offseason.
A: This offseason the Coaches pushed me. I'm focused on getting my weight up and learning the plays and being able to direct the defense as MLB.

Q: You said get your weight up? Where were you at the end of the season? What are you weighing now?
A: I was at 215 and I'm at 230 right now.

Q: Do you feel like you're noticing a difference?
A: Yes I feel a lot stronger on the inside.

Q: Do you feel like your speed is still there at 230?
A: Yeah I still got my speed. I feel a stronger twitch; the blockers aren't really on me as much.

Q: What's your mindset on improving the defense?
A: Everybody's just having fun and getting to the football. Finding the football and getting to the football.

Q: How's Alex Figueroa doing?
A: He's great. He plays with a lot of intensity, he's very fast, and he loves to hit.

Q: How's this Linebacker core different from when you last saw it last season?
A: A lot of the guys now, we all have our head on straight and we want to be great. We don't have any selfish guys. Everybody is helping everybody out. A lot of the older guys are helping the younger guys. Like I said, nobody's selfish. We all want to be successful.

Q: How do you feel going into the Spring as a starter?
A: It's a great accomplishment, like I said it comes from a lot of hard work and a lot of push from the coaches in the offseason. Right now I'm just looking to take my game to the next level and make a lot of plays.

Q: What do you expect from yourself next season?
A: Next season I want to be very vocal, communicate and just being physical.

Q: What's the strength of your game? If you had to scout yourself, what would you say.
A: My speed and my eye for the football.

Q: What do you run the 40 in?
A: 4.6
