Q&A: Zylan Cheatham

Four-star power forward Zylan Cheatham talks with FOX Sports NEXT about the latest in his recruitment, including Nebraska and New Mexico.

How is the recruiting process going?
"As of late I have been hearing from quite a few schools. The last tournament I played pretty well. There were schools watching other guys, but found interest in me. So basically everything is falling into place right now. I just am working and trying to get better."

Are there any schools that are recruiting you harder at this point?
"Probably New Mexico is recruiting me the hardest at this point. I have been hearing from three coaches on a regular basis.

"I'm actually been hearing from Nebraska a lot lately. Purdue of course and Arkansas as well. They have been picking it up lately."

You mentioned Nebraska. What do you know about them at this point?
"I know they are a Big Ten school and play in a good conference. Coach Smith actually came out and watched my practice. I didn't know who he was. But afterwards he told me he liked me as a player and we sat down. He ran the program through to me and pulled stuff up on his iPad. He ran down everything, including what their new facilities are going to look like. We talked it up and he seems like a good guy. They look like they have a lot to offer."

Nebraska is a program that is probably classified as on the rise. Does that interest you or are you wanting to go to a more established program?
"Actually the rebuilding thing is really a good thing. I want to go somewhere where I have an opportunity to play and being part of a key factor in winning and the team's success. Being that they are rebuilding, I could see myself slipping in and being a big part of the turnaround. It would definitely be something that I would consider."

New Mexico isn't in one of the major conferences, but has a solid tradition and respected coaching staff. Does playing in a conference like the Mountain West phase you at all?
"They had a good year. The Moutain West is actually picking up and looking a lot better. Coach Alford is a good guy, with history. I have been reading about him and have talked with him. I know he was an All-American. He obviously knows what he's talking about. Like I said, I want to go to a place where I'm a factor and can possibly get to the next level. So it's more about player development and then winning to me."

I know you are far away from a decision, but have you thought about your visit process?
"At this point, it seems like every school I talk to I want to visit – of course I don't have that many visits. I'm going to narrow my list down my senior year and that's when I will take the five officials during the fall. November 17th I plan to make my decision."
