"Syracuse wants me to come in and play right away. They need some help and some athletes," Mayes said. "They also like me as a return guy. I will try and get up there this summer."
While the Orange is the lone offer right now that could change and change soon. Georgia, SC, FSU, Cincinnati, Utah, Utah State, Illinois, Mississippi State, North Carolina, and Louisville are all schools showing interest and recruiting Mayes. He and his teammates will also make a summer tour to visit and camp at schools like Georgia, Georgia Tech, USF, FSU, Florida, Alabama and Clemson.
"This Saturday I am camping at Miami," Mayes said. "Then my team is going on a summer trip to visit and camp at a bunch of schools."
For now Mayes remains wide open.
"I will base my decision on tradition and playing early," Mayes said. "I honestly don't care about the position I play. I just want to help my team and play to my potential."
Mayes, almost 6-foot-2 and 187-pounds, said teams are recruiting him to play on both sides of the ball at defensive back and receiver.
"I prefer defense because I like to hit, I like to be physical," Mayes said. "I don't like to be hit."
