UM Recruiting Scoop: 6/17

Read on for all the latest recruiting news and information surrounding the University of Miami, with complete analysis from CanesTime's Mike Bakas.

* Alabama received a commitment over the weekend from 4-star QB David Cornwell from Oklahoma. This is worth mentioning for two reasons -- 1) The Hurricanes had offered him earlier this year and 2) it likely lessens the chances of the Tide making an offer to Malik Rosier, who remains a key target for the Hurricanes. At 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, Rosier is from Alabama but camped here and has an offer from the Canes. He wanted to check out a few other camps before making a final decision. Alabama is one place he went, and impressed at. The Tide didn't offer, and they likely won't now. There's still a good chance that Rosier will be one of the two quarterbacks in Miami's 2014 class.

* Speaking of Alabama, one player who earned an offer from the Tide at their camp this past weekend is 4-star defensive lineman Cory Thomas. The reason that's important to note is because Miami offered him a few weeks ago. Interestingly, he told Scout that the offer from Alabama came much later than he expected so the Tide aren't automatically at the top of his list. He grew up a Miami fan, still has a lot of interest in Mississippi State, and is someone who seems to still be fairly wide open. The Hurricanes will likely get a visit from him later in the year, and he's certainly a high caliber defensive line prospect to keep an eye on.

* Abu Lamin is the latest player to have been offered by Miami. It happened just before the weekend started. At 6-foot-5 and 315 pounds, he's a 4-star Juco DT prospect from Fort Scott, KS. Originally from North Carolina, Lamin redshirted last season and is on track to graduate this coming December with three years to play three. He visited Florida this past weekend and is set to see South Carolina this coming weekend. Miami is competing with Nebraska, Arizona State, and several SEC schools for the final three visit spots. The offer indicates Miami is still searching for Juco DL help, even after they've already offered a handful of them (and have a commitment from Dalvon Stuckey).

* Speaking of Juco prospects, Chad Mavety says the Hurricanes offered him earlier this year. He's a Juco OL prospect from New York. He took his first official visit this past weekend when he saw Ohio State. He has Tennessee this coming weekend, followed by Syracuse and Rutgers. Miami is hoping to get the last visit but they're in the hunt with several other schools so their chances don't seem too good right now. The Canes already have a very strong O-Line class with four current commitments. They are seeking a fifth, however.
