Blockbuster Weekend: 6 new commits

The Hurricanes hosted lots of players for their football camp this weekend, and came away with six new commitments. Read on for more..

The Hurricanes landed four players on Saturday, and two more today.

Saturday's commitments were Chris Herndon, Michael Smith, Darrion Owens, and Dennis Turner. Today's commitments came from Trayon Gray and Charles Perry.

Herndon, 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds, plays at Norcross High in Georgia. He recently landed an offer from Mississippi State and was invited to camp here this weekend. He impressed the coaches enough to land an offer. "I'm blessed to say that I committed to Miami," Herndon said.

Smith, 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, is a pass rushing specialist from Miami Northwestern High. He put his name on the recruiting map when he recorded 17 sacks as a junior last season. He was offered by Miami earlier this spring and had a lot of other major BCS offers.

Owens, 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, is one of the top linebacker prospects in north Florida. The Oak Leaf High standout finished last season with over 100 tackles. He recently cut his list down to five -- Miami, Auburn, Georgia, Michigan, and Ohio State -- before choosing the Canes.

Turner, 5-foot-11 and 160 pounds, is a lightly recruited wide receiver prospect from Dillard High in Fort Lauderdale. He didn't have any other BCS offers but impressed the coaches enough at camp to get the offer.

Gray, 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds, is another lightly recruited local receiver who committed this weekend. Western Kentucky offered him recently and the Canes gave him one this weekend.

Perry, 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds, is just a rising junior at Royal Palm Beach High. He is a standout at both running back and linebacker but projects as a defensive player in college. Perry is expected to be among the top juniors in Palm Beach County in 2013.
