"I think Coach McGrath called him," Thompson said. "… Just to say they had heard good things about him and were going to track him in July. He was pretty excited to hear that."
"That was the first time Devin had heard from North Carolina," Thompson added.
Does Robinson have mutual interest in the Tar Heels?
"I think so," Thompson said. "I think he would probably be pretty interested in the tradition that comes along with Carolina and obviously you respect the program and what they've done, playing in the ACC or any high level ACC interest is something that he would be very excited about."
Robinson currently has scholarship offers from Auburn, Cincinnati, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, USC, Virginia Tech and VCU. Georgetown, Louisville and Duke are also showing interest.
"He has a pretty good list going," Thompson said. "I think he's still pretty wide open. I think what's going to happen is after the July period is over I think he will definitely start thinking about it. He's not really thinking about it right now"
At this point, Robinson doesn't have any planned visits, but has already taken a trio of unofficial trips.
"He checked out VCU," Thompson said. "He's a Richmond kid. He's been to Virginia Tech and Georgetown for unofficials back during the beginning of the school year."
"I think he'll take some visits in the fall," he added, "Unless that something comes up that wows him, I think he'll probably take all five of his officials."
Although Robinson, Scout.com's No. 30 overall player, isn't focused on the recruiting process at the moment, he is hoping to make his college choice before his senior season.
"He tells me he wants to get it done before the high school season starts," Thompson said. "I think he will get it done by then."
Robinson has a busy July scheduled. He'll play at the LeBron James Skills Academy this weekend and will start the first July evaluation period in Philadelphia (Pa.) at the Reebok Breakout Challenge.
