The Brown Ripple Effect

One week ago five star defensive tackle Andrew Brown committed to Virginia. How does his commitment affect UVa's standing in the recruiting world? FOXSportsNext breaks it down.

Just one week ago, the Virginia Cavaliers welcomed with open arms another member of the 2014 class, five star Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, Virginia) defensive tackle Andrew Brown.

A lot of the FOXSportsNext team have seen Brown in action and all weigh in on how crucial this get could be for UVa.

Virginia is no stranger to 5-Star talent, but anytime you can bring in a defensive tackle of this magnitude, it has a ripple effect that helps solidify the entire defense. A stout defensive tackle frees up linebackers and gives quarterbacks less time to throw in turn helping the pass defense. Virginia has to be successful in keeping local players home and not let other teams raid their home grown talent, and if they're able to sign guys like Blanding and Brown, the Cavaliers will be slamming the door on national powers who feel Virginia is a ripe area to steal kids.

To me, the biggest thing Brown's commitment does is sets the table for the rest of the class. When a prospect the caliber of Brown commits, it sends a message to other recruits that a school can seriously recruit and compete for the best players. In the talent-rich 757, it means Brown and Quin Blanding can share their vision of UVa to other prospects, not just in this class, but in the 2015 and 2016 classes.

Grabbing a five-star will draw a lot of positive attention to the football program, especially the recruiting part of things. This type of news travels to many different locations across the country and having a kid like Andrew Brown on the commitment list makes playing for UVA that much more appealing, especially to defensive prospects.

You can bet the Virginia coaches will use this commitment to try to lure others to join this class. Brown is well known, he's been a big name prospect for a couple of years, and he could quickly give the Cavaliers some real momentum.

UVA now has two five-star commitments and both are from their home state, that really says something about Mike London and his staff on the recruiting trail in their own backyard.

think it's about perception. There was a time in the 90s when UVa recruited very well, landing their share of elite prospects and realistically competing for top end guys. To me they are no different than a team like North Carolina, Vandy, Stanford or Notre Dame. It just takes the right mix of coaches with the right guy running the show - doesn't matter where you are. It's about selling a product, your program, and where it's headed. I think having such high caliber academics can be both a blessing and a curse. It could certainly scare away some players but can also attract some. In the end though, like the other programs mentioned above, your prospect pool shrinks, making things a little harder.

So what would Brown do for UVa? It would be huge in more ways than one to land this him. First, he's the top rated DT in this class at this point. Brown is from the state and I would imagine that would help with others from Virginia and in the region, maybe in the country. He would join Quin Blanding, another five-star talent in the Cavs '14 class. This is the start of a very nice class for UVa. I say start because it's only July. They have nine commits with Brown, two of which are five-stars. Typically, you see this kind of group earlier in a coaching regime, not of someone that is five games under .500 like Mike London. But he has always seem to have pulled a big name or two.

Now they have two five-star prospects headed into July. This can create a lot of recruiting momentum for which they can perhaps build on. Recruiting is a lot like football in regards to momentum. But they need to play well and give these recruits (and fans) that there is excitement, energy around the program and that the program is INDEED moving forward. Not backward or stuck in neutral. Lastly, your best recruiters are not the coaches but the kids themselves. So if group of coomits has a ring leader or two that helps this staff off the field recruit, that could be huge moving forward.
