Griffin to Prep School

Derrick Griffin signed two weeks after National Signing Day with the University of Miami. Now the 4-star receiver says he won't begin school until December.

According to Derrick Griffin, he will start his Miami career in December -- and plans to play basketball. Since the spring semester doesn't begin until mid-January, that will likely be his actual enrollment date.

At 6-foot-6 and 215 pounds, the Rosenburg (Texas) standout receiver signed with Miami back in February. He was a strong late addition to Miami's 2013 recruiting class, but it was believed from day one that he'd likely have to spend a semester at a prep school.

As I said at the time of his signing, it's far from over. A lot of schools in Texas and surrounding areas stopped recruiting Griffin right around Signing Day, which gave Miami -- who recruited him very late -- a chance to jump in and grab him.

By attending prep school this fall, Griffin will have to go through the recruiting process all over again. While the Canes will have the inside track since they stuck with him all year, they'll likely have some competition.

Griffin will be free to take more official visits this fall, and will have a chance to enroll at another school for the spring semester.

He now, essentially, becomes a wide receiver target for Miami's 2014 class that already includes commitments from Trayon Gray and Darrell Langham.
