UM Recruiting Scoop: 7/18

Read on for all the latest recruiting news and information surrounding the University of Miami, with complete analysis from CanesTime's Mike Bakas.

* The Hurricanes have been very active in their recruiting efforts at the wide receiver position this year. Two players who received very early offers from the Hurricanes committed to other schools yesterday. Corey Holmes (St. Thomas Aquinas) picked Notre Dame, while Austin Roberts (Indiana) chose UCLA. Holmes always expressed a strong desire to leave the state for college. Roberts was very interested in Miami, and his father (Alfredo) played here back in the 80s. He just felt a great connection with the UCLA coaches, and had some ties to them through his father. The Hurricanes currently have three WR commitments in the 2014 class, and still are targeting several other players at the position.

* The Hurricanes have four offensive line commitments in the 2014 class right now, but they're still actively recruiting a few other players there indicating a desire to sign five players up front. One recent addition to the Big Board is Damien Mama. At 6-foot-4 and 375 pounds, Mama is an elite level OG prospect from California. He was offered by Miami recently, and the Hurricanes were listed among his final 13 schools earlier this week. While it won't be easy for the Canes, being on that list is a step in the right direction.

* The search for Junior College transfers along the defensive line has continued. One key target there is Calvin Heurtelou, a defensive end prospect from Arizona who visited here last month. Miami remains the only school he's visited so far. No commitment was made, however, and he's still considering taking a few other visits before making a final decision. He is friends and teammates with Juco LB Antonio Smothers, who also visited here last month and has an offer from the Hurricanes.

* Another Juco DL prospect to keep an eye on moving forward is Claude Pelon. At 6-foot-5 and 275 pounds, Pelon has a large number of offers including Miami, Nebraska, Florida, and others. He is expected to graduate in December and start at a Division 1 school in January. He joins a long list of Juco prospects the Hurricanes are targeting along the defensive line. He named Nebraska and Washington as his top two schools last month but the Hurricanes have been coming on strong lately, and he's been warming up to the idea of taking a visit here and learning more about the school and program. He's a player to keep an eye on.
