Interview with Sleeper TE

I recently was browsing over a list of statistics from a huge combine that was held in Houston earlier this summer. The standout performances were done by kids I am already aware of.

However, one name I didn't recognize. It was Houston (Second Baptist School) tight end/defensive end Glenn January.

At the Houston combine, January was 6-foot-6 and 255 pounds, and he ran a 5.10. While attending five summer camps in the state of Texas this year, January said he got as low as 4.92 and as high as 5.12. He also turned in a 28 inch vertical leap at the Texas Tech camp, showing off excellent explosion. In comparison, Willie Roberts did a 26 inch vert at the Miami NIKE Camp prior to his senior season.

In a very small private school, January goes both ways and was named All State as a junior last season. He was also named the small school player of the Year in Houston.

After I saw those numbers, I got his number and have been trying to call him. I figured maybe he's a 1AA prospect who's not being recruited by anyone or perhaps he's a major sleeper. Well...

Your current core GPA: I have a 2.77 in a college prep schedule, so the scale is a lot different than a regular public high school (editor's note: That would be roughly a 3.7 at a public school).

Your current test score: I got a 1200 on the SAT's.

Which schools called you in May: I got a bunch of them, and also missed several of them. Texas Tech, SMU, Baylor, Rice, TCU, and a few others that I missed.

What about the University of Miami: Coach Chudzinski came by my school in May. He called the house, but I wasn't here to talk to him.

Do you have any scholarship offers in the mail yet: Not sir, but some of those schools have talked about it.

If signing day were tomorrow, what's it looking like: I plan on taking visits to Tech, SMU, and TCU. My father played at Tech, and my grandfather played at SMU, so I'd like to definitely check those places out. I'm not sure about the other ones yet.

Is Miami one of those under consideration: Yes sir. If they keep recruiting me and I'm able to visit, that would be great. They're a great program.

Well, I was right on this one. Interestingly, neither Texas or Texas A&M are showing any interest, but doesn't this remind you so much of how the recruitment of Bubba Franks went several years ago? I'm not saying January is that type of player, but he's a kid to keep your eyes on.
