UM Recruiting Scoop: 7/27

Read on for all the latest recruiting news and information surrounding the University of Miami, with complete analysis from CanesTime's Mike Bakas.

* Florida held their annual Friday Night Lights Camp last night and one of the top performers was former UM WR commit Travis Rudolph. At 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds, Rudolph has now been to the UF campus a handful of times this year and they seem to be one of Miami's top competitors. Coached by former UM QB Steve Walsh at Cardinal Newman High, Rudolph says he remains wide open with the recruiting process. He's named three schools -- Florida, Auburn, and Miami -- as favorites at one point during the year. He remains a key wide receiver target for the Hurricanes.

* Speaking of receivers, the Gators landed a commitment from 2015 standout Da'vante Phillips. At 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds, Phillips had a very good sophomore season at Miami Central and received an offer from the Hurricanes earlier this year. This commitment is very early, and it simply says the Gators are the current favorite. This time last year Joseph Yearby (now UM) was committed to Florida State and Dalvin Cook (now UF) to Clemson. The Canes will likely recruit Phillips hard into his junior season this fall.

* Ravian Pierce was offered by the Gators following their camp last night. At 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, Pierce told Scout last night that the Gators are in his top three now along with Alabama and Arkansas. Considering he grew up a Miami fan and landed an early offer from the Canes, it sounds like either he's had a big change of mind or the Canes aren't recruiting him as hard as some think. The Canes already have one TE commit (Chris Herndon) and it seems like New Jersey's Mike Gesicki is the top target right now for that second spot, if they decide to take a 2nd tight end in this class.

* Justus Reed committed to Florida last night following their camp. At 6-foot-3 and 235 pounds, he's an OLB/DE from Clearwater Central Catholic. Miami offered him back in the spring but he never made it down for a summer visit so it seemed unlikely that he'd come here. The Canes currently have two DE commitments (Chad Thomas and Demetrius Jackson) and are in good shape with a pair of in-state standouts who visited here earlier this summer -- Rohan Blackwood and Trent Harris.
