The Orange (N.J.) standout had a busy summer, attending summer camps at Syracuse, Penn State, and Rutgers. He was among the best players at all three camps. At each one, he checked in at 6-foot-4 and 270 pounds. At Syracuse he ran a 4.89/40 and a 4.91 at the other two, including Penn State's on turf. He's clearly a big kid that can really move with tremendous quicks.
What really blew me away was the fact that Alford finished his junior season with 110 tackles from his defensive tackle position in just 10 games. Talk about active, that's 11 per game! He also finished with 13 tackles, and two caused fumbles.
Your current core GPA: 2.8 core
Your current test score: I got an 820 my first time. I want to take it over, though.
Talk about your summer: I went to camps at Rutgers, Syracuse, and Penn State. There was competition at all three so I wanted to see how I stacked up.
So are you the best defensive lineman in Jersey: I dont know about all that (laughing). I can only control what I do, and I want to repeat my performance from last season.
Which schools have sent you scholarship offers in the mail: In the mail - Penn State, Syracuse, Rutgers, Miami, Michigan, Iowa, and Notre Dame, and a couple more. But those are the main ones.
If signing day were tomorrow, what's it looking like: Penn State and Miami are my top two choices right now. Syracuse, Virginia, and Maryland are also possibilities.
Sounds like you want out of Jersey, what about the region? I'm not totally taking Rutgers off my list yet, but I'm pretty sure I'll be taking them off later on. Penn State's not too far, but I really want to check out Miami.
Speaking of whom, what are they talking about: They talked to me on the phone and told me they really liked me as a defensive tackle. They sent me a scholarship and they're one of my top choices right now. That will be one of the places I visit. (editor's note: Greg Mark, who recruited Thomas Carroll and Jamaal Green, is recruiting Alford).
He's definitely a premier prospect. Alford was offered around the same time as guys like Martin and Wright, so he has to be considered among the elite defensive tackle prospects in the entire country. We landed Jersey's best d-line prospect last year, despite Carroll's liking Penn State early on (like Alford), so hopefully we can have similar success this year.
I love Alford's size/speed combo and his stats speak volumes of how active of a player he is inside. He's a fun kid to talk to, he's fully qualified, and he's very honest, like when he said he doesn't know if he's the best in Jersey and that he would have to prove it and leave that judgement to others. If we go outside the state for a defensive tackle, I'd love to have the opportunity to land this kid!
