South Florida Safety Has National Attention

About a month ago, I watched defensive end Baraka Atkins tear up the University of Miami summer camp. For the next few weeks, I tried getting film of his junior season. It finally arrived, and Atkins wasn't the only standout on Sarasota Booker's defense.

Meet safety Abe Brown, who measured at 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds at his team's football camp earlier this summer. He ran a 4.48 on track at that camp, which is every bit as fast as incoming safeties Antrel Rolle and Sean Taylor.

Brown is a ballhawk at the safety position. He's very strong in coverage and is even being recruited by some schools as a cornerback, not as a linebacker.

Your current core GPA: 3.5

Your current test score: I got an 860 on the SAT (editor's note: Brown has already passed both sections of the HSCT).

Which schools called in May: A bunch of them. Florida, Miami, Florida State, LSU, Auburn, Michigan State, Ohio State, West Virginia, and some other ones.

Which schools have offered you scholarships in writing: Nobody has sent it in writing yet, but I have some verbal offers, such as Miami, Florida, Ohio State, Michigan State, LSU.

What's Miami talking about: I talked with Coach Kehoe. He seems like a good guy. He said that their defensive backs coach, Stoops, loves me, and that they will have a scholarship for me this season. I have a teammate (Baraka Atkins) who was offered by Miami after their camp and he really likes them. We've talked a lot about going to the same school together, so if he commits to Miami, then I'll probably be even more interested in them. We're pretty much considering the same schools.

If signing day were tomorrow, what's it looking like: Florida and Miami are on top and I'd also say Ohio State and Michigan State.

Brown is definitely a kid I will be watching in person this fall, along with teammate Atkins. After I saw him on tape last week, I quickly moved him up into the No. 3 spot in the state at safety before I had ever talked to him and realized how hard he was being recruited.

Booker is one of the most talented programs every year in south Florida, and it's a major plus that Brown is already qualified before his senior season begins. I love his ability on the field, and he sounds like an exciting prospect that is showing strong interest in the University of Miami.
