Spring Ball - Thursday

The stars of the night were running backs Ciatrick Fason and Leon Washington.

I've already watched Fason this spring, and I think he's a big time back. He once again proved that tonight. Committed to Florida, Fason's name should have little interest to Miami fans, so I'll get right to the point - Leon Washington.

At 5-9 and 190, Washington is built very similar to Clint Portis. He has a low center of gravity, he has a very powerful lower body that allows him to break a lot of tackles. He runs with very good balance and vision, but with 4.55 speed, he lacks the breakaway threat to be considered a big time back at 5-9 and 190. Defensively, he's a very good safety who loves contact, covers the field well, and can really hit. He caused three fumbles tonight. But he's simply not a natural safety because he can be confused, isn't the most fluid, and his lack of size can be exposed by bigger receiving targets.

While he's one of the best athletes in the Jacksonville area and certainly a tremendous high school player, Washington is a mid level Div 1 kid to me. He'll need a huge senior season and will need to get a lot faster if he wants to play at one of the Big 3. As a running back, his best position, however, he's not in the same league as the kids UM has now. Regardless, he's a great player.
