Gameday: Canes vs FAU

The Hurricanes will open their 2013 season at home tonight against Florida Atlantic.

The 2013 football season has arrived. Year three of the Al Golden era at the University of Miami officially begins tonight against Florida Atlantic. The game is set for an 8 pm kickoff on ESPNU.

The Hurricanes return 20 starters from last year's team, including senior quarterback Stephen Morris. He's coming off one of the best seasons ever by a Miami quarterback, and will look to build on that performance this season.

Duke Johnson was the team's most explosive playmaker in 2012, and that likely won't change this fall.

The Canes have a massive offensive line that features a lot of experience, led by senior guard Brandon Linder. The performance of this group tonight - and throughout the season - will likely determine how good this offense can really be.

Everyone knows Miami has a legitimate offense that should be able to put up lots of points. The big question mark is on the defensive side of the ball.

Third year coordinator Mark D'Onofrio's unit has been shredded for big chunks of yards and points in each of the past two seasons. This group, after losing just Brandon McGee from the two deep, is a lot older and deeper.

The Hurricanes brought in a few transfers along the defensive line, and should have a much better pass rush in 2013. A healthy Curtis Porter inside will really help, too. The linebackers are experienced and deep. Everyone but McGee returns in the secondary.

Pat O'Donnell takes over as the team's punter, and he should be one of the best in the ACC this fall. Matt Goudis takes over on field goals.

Despite NCAA sanctions hovering over the program, this appears to be Miami's most complete and best-coached team in several years.

We all get a first look at the 2013 team tonight, and it should provide an exciting start to what should be a good season for the Hurricanes.
