UM Recruiting Scoop: 12/20

Read on for all the absolute latest recruiting news and information surrounding the University of Miami, with complete analysis from CanesTime's Mike Bakas.

* WR David Njoku visited Miami this past weekend, and came away very impressed. He did not commit, however. The former Rutgers commit scheduled a visit to Ohio State earlier this week and then landed an offer from Penn State, where he plans to visit next month as well. He's also taken a visit to Temple. Rutgers is still hanging in as well. The 6-foot-4 receiver from New Jersey fits the mold of a big WR that Miami's coaches are still seeking in the 2014 class. It'll be interesting to see how hard the Canes pursue him down the stretch but it seems as though they'll definitely have some stiff competition now.

* Chris Hernon is a tight end from Georgia, who committed here back over the summer. I'm hearing that he plans to take some January visits now. He is set to visit here next month but it's still unclear which other schools he plans to see. While he remains a solid commitment to the Canes, this is a situation we'll continue to monitor as we head into the home stretch.

* The Hurricanes have four offensive line commitments right now, and it seems like they're still trying to add a 5th player to this class. The four key names to keep an eye on down the stretch are 4-star Damian Prince (Maryland), 3-star Ben Knox (Deland), 3-star Derrick Kelly (East Gadsden), and 4-star Frank Ragnow (Minnesota). All four are being actively recruited by the Canes and there's a good chance they'll each take visits here next month. Ragnow has taken visits to FSU, Arkansas, and Minnesota so far. Prince has visited Maryland and FSU. Kelly has not yet taken his trips yet. Knox, a one-time Florida commitment, has visited USF and NC State already.

* The strange news of the week came from Juco DT Calvin Heurtelou. At 6-foot-3 and 310 pounds, the 3-star was offered by the Canes way back in the spring. He took an official visit here over the summer but then things seemed to cool down a bit. After Dalvon Stuckey flipped his commitment to Auburn, Heurtelou said the Canes started coming after him really hard again. He's taken visits to Tennessee, Rutgers, and Missouri in recent months. His coach told Scout earlier this week that the kid plans to sign with Miami, although Calvin has told a few Scout reporters that he's not totally decided yet. Either way, things appear to look good here for the Canes heading into the weekend. He is a spring entry and would give the Canes a pair of Juco DT's for the spring semester (along with Mike Wyche).

* Kenny Young scheduled a visit to Miami for January earlier this week. He's a 4-star LB prospect from the state of Louisiana. While it's never easy pulling those kids away from LSU and SEC country, Young has always expressed a decent amount of interest in the Canes. We'll learn a lot more about his interest following his visit here next month. The Canes have four LB commitments right now but have visits lined up with Young and Virginia's Raymon Minor, which says the Canes would like to sign five linebackers in this year's class.
