DE Clelin Ferrell Profile
That stud defensive end is rising senior Clelin Ferrell, who picked Clemson over several other offers, including Michigan State, Virginia Tech Tennessee, LSU, South Carolina and Michigan.
"He's really long, athletic and explosive," Lilly said. "I think he has the potential to be a great player that coupled with the fact that he is a hard-worker, really, really dedicated to working and getting better.
"He's just one of those kids, when he came here the summer before his ninth grade he's done everything we've asked him."
Off the field, Ferrell is "a humble, quiet kid who won't gravitate towards the spotlight."
He first visited Clemson in April for the spring game.
"He really enjoyed it. The word he kept saying to all you guys about it is he felt really comfortable and felt like a place where it would be like a family down there," Lilly said. "I think, as he got to meet coach [Marion] Hobby a little bit more, the defensive line coach, it became a good relationship with coach Hobby and he felt very comfortable with him.
"He's coming from a place here -- we're all boys, military school. There are only 275 guys in the school, so he's kind of used to it being a close-knit-type of community, like a family. I know he got that feeling down there when he met the coaching staff and supporting staff down at Clemson."
Lilly believes Ferrell's strong connection with the Clemson coaches was the biggest reason why he committed to the Tigers.
"I think he really felt like they were concerned with him, but not only as a student and an athlete, but also as a man," Lilly said, "And that's something that we've sort of harped on these guys here as a military school, their development as men of character and conscience, discipline and achievement."
