As a recruit: Kevin Olsen put his name on the recruiting map as a junior when he led his team to a state championship. He received scholarships from all the major college programs that recruit the state of New Jersey. After taking several unofficial visits over the summer before his senior season, Olsen committed to Miami over Wisconsin and Auburn in the end. He missed most of his senior season with a broken bone in his foot but still played in the Under Armour All-American Game. He didn't take visits to any other schools.
As a Hurricane: Olsen redshirted last season and was then suspended for the bowl game against Louisville. He started the spring as the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart but was given the starting job after Ryan Williams tore his ACL. Olsen did not perform well in the spring game, however, and it's probably one of the big reasons why UM landed a transfer from Jake Heaps soon after that. Olsen was then suspended again a couple days ago and is expected to miss at least one game.
What to expect: Olsen has the physical tools you look for in a quarterback. He has plus size, ideal arm strength, some athletic ability, and he won a lot of football games at one of the premier programs in New Jersey back in high school. Unfortunately, it's not been a smooth transition from high school to college. He struggled leading the offense in the spring and has now been suspended twice. It seems like he could be getting close to seeing his final days as a Hurricane. Jake Heaps will now very likely be the team's starting quarterback until Williams returns. Olsen will likely serve as the team's No. 2, even if freshmen Brad Kaaya and Malik Rosier do well right away. After Williams returns, Olsen will likely become the No. 3 guy and it's likely only a matter of time before the new guys pass him on the depth chart.
