Golden talks safety situation & more

Read on to see what Al Golden is saying about the safety situation, Gus Edwards, a couple freshmen, and much more following Saturday's practice.

On Gus Edwards:
Today, I told him I wasn’t pleased with him early on. He ran with more purpose today. The competition helped. Gus answered it the second half of practice. He’s different than the other two.

On the safety spot:
We know Tambu can go back there. Ladarius and some of our corners have taken reps there. We have to stay healthy there, no question.

On giving young guys more reps today:
If someone goes down in the first quarter against Louisville, I don’t wanna see that look that night. I wanna see it in the morning. We want guys to be ready, to be prepared to step up. I wanted to see who would replace the leaders.

On Marques Gayot being ready:
Not yet. Hester, Gayot, Tolson, and Hugo have taken reps in there. It’ll have to come from that group. It’s a high impact position. We have to make sure we stay healthy and have enough depth.

On Trayone Gray:
He’s getting better every day, and he’s in good competition and he’s making less mistakes. I’m seeing more confidence in him.

On the McDermotts:
Shane’s 301 right now, and he probably finished last year at 288. Kc has done a great job with his body. We want them to be uncomfortable right now. We have a long way to go before naming the starting five.

On leadership:
You notice when Chad steps up. You noticed Dallas today. We need more guys on the offensive side to step up. Clive stepped up today. Leadership isn’t just someone saying something. You want to see guys doing it every period.

On Darrell Langham:
I’m very pleased with him. I can’t imagine someone being that big running that well. He came in at 230. We want him to 222. He’s learning well. He’s big and strong. He is a redzone threat. He gives us as a good blocker on the perimeter. We’re excited about him.
