Season Preview: Linebackers

Loaded with depth, the Hurricanes group of linebackers is one of the fastest and most talented groups around, and it's led by senior Chris Campbell.

Coach: Vernon Hargreaves

The Starters: Will DJ Williams (6-2, 244, SO), Mike Jonathan Vilma (6-2, 222, SO), and Sam Chris Campbell (6-2, 245, SR)

The Backups: Jerrell Weaver (6-3, 203, SO), Howard Clark (6-2, 224, JR), Darrell McClover (6-2, 215, SO), Ken Dangerfield (6-2, 230, JR), Carl Walker (6-3, 215, SO), Leon Williams (6-4, 220, FR), and Roger McIntosh (6-3, 220, FR)

The Good Stuff: This unit is led by Campbell on the strong side. After starting eight games and playing well as a sophomore, he put it all together as a junior last season and finished with 79 tackles and four sacks. With another year under his belt, those numbers should go up again this season. Williams doesn't have a lot of experience on the weakside, but he's got plenty of talent. Clark started all last season on the weakside, and now he's in the middle after a great spring. Vilma also played a lot behind Morgan as a true freshman. This is the fastest linebacker unit at UM since 92 when the Bermuda Triangle headed the defense.

Potential Worries: Despite all the talent and speed, Williams has never started a game as a linebacker in college, while Clark has never started a game in the middle. A possibility remains that Williams could play the middle with Clark moving back to the weakside. Or if Vilma beats out Clark, it could move Howard back outside. Get the idea? The exact starting lineup and rotation of this group remains unsettled at this point.
