Season Preview: Safeties

Edward Reed is an All-American, while many believe James Lewis is an improvement over Al Blades from last season.

Coach: Mark Stoops

The Starters: Edward Reed (6-0, 198, SR) and James Lewis (5-11, 196, SR)

The Backups: James Scott (6-2, 193, JR), Maurice Sikes (5-11, 194, SO), Jermell Weaver (6-2, 190, SO), Sean Taylor (6-3, 215, FR), and Antrel Rolle (6-0, 195, FR)

The Good Stuff: After starting his first two years at UM, Reed became an All-American last season and was among the nation's leaders in interceptions with eight. He should be even better this season. He's been switched to free safety, where he'll be even more dangerous this season. Lewis has played well in back of Blades over the last few years and had an outstanding spring. Scott is one of the team's best athletes, while Sikes is probably the best cover guy of the group. Taylor and Rolle, both true freshmen, are two of three players in the entire freshmen class that Coker said had strong enough preseason camps to get them playing time this fall.

Potential Worries: With two seniors leading the way and some inexperienced backups, it's a lot like many other positions on this team – injuries would be the biggest concern. If we stay healthy here, it should be a strength of the team.
