Season Preview: Special Teams

Freddie Capshaw is one of the best punters in the conference while the Hurricanes have plenty of weapons in the return game.

The Starter: PK Todd Sievers (6-3, 215, JR), P Freddie Capshaw (5-11, 190, JR), KR Willis McGahee (6-1, 230, FR), KR Jason Geathers (6-3, 215, SO), PR Daryl Jones (5-10, 175, SR)

The Backups: Mark Gent (6-1, 203, FR)

The Good Stuff: Capshaw emerged as one of the best punters in the conference last season, averaging 43.2 yards per punt. He knocked seven inside the 20 and did not have any blocked. His average should improve this season with another year of experience. Sievers was 10-for-11 on field goals under 40 yards. He also hit 28 of 83 kickoffs into the endzone for touchbacks, ranking third in the conference. In the return game, Daryl Jones averaged 27 yards per kickoff return and 24 per punt return with a touchdown. He should be every bit as explosive on punt returns as Santana Moss was last season. Several candidates are vying for kickoff return duties, including the front runners Willis McGahee and Jason Geathers. Chris Harvey returns as long snapper.

Potential Worries: Sievers was almost automatic inside 40 yards, but he was just 1-for-6 outside of 40 yards, making that an area that he needs to improve in. The Hurricanes also didn't block as many kicks last season as they have in previous years and that will continue to be an area of focus on special teams.
