The Canes are set to host a huge recruiting weekend starting on Friday. Ten committed players are scheduled to make their official visits to UM this weekend along with a handful of uncommitted players. Lets take a closer look.
Antonio Calloway is one of the area's top WR prospects from Booker T Washington High. He's been extremely quiet about the recruiting process the whole time. He has been to Miami 3 or 4 times but Florida, Alabama, and Auburn are making a strong push as well and he's set to visit those three schools later in the month. This one could go either way.
OL Tyler Gauthier, OL Brendan Loftus, OL Hayden Mahoney, LB Jamie Gordinier, DT Ryan Fines, DE RJ McIntosh, and DB Robert Knowles are rock solid with their commitments and haven't considered any other trips.
Tyree St Louis took an official visit to Syracuse last month and is still considering taking trips to Florida and Tennessee later this month if those schools made late offers, which could happen. For now, he remains firm with his commitment to the Canes.
The two toughest committed players to hang onto will be running backs Jordan Scarlett and Mark Walton. Both 4-star players on Scout, they each have other visits scheduled for later this month. Scarlett is going to Florida next weekend and then possibly Florida State the following weekend. The Gators are making a serious push with their new staff, led by co-DC Randy Shannon. Walton is set to see West Virginia and Louisville later this month but also keep an eye on Georgia and perhaps Florida State. It won't be easy keeping both players committed but Miami seems to be in good shape heading into the weekend.
At least seven uncommitted players are scheduled to be on campus as well.
Fredrick Johnson is a 6-foot-7 offensive tackle prospect from Royal Palm Beach HS. A one-time Virginia Tech commitment, he opened things up when Miami offered him late in the season. Even though the Canes must survive late January visits to Florida and Tennessee, Johnson is expected to sign with Miami in the end.
If Johnson picks Miami, it would give the Canes six offensive line commitments. That would be enough but they're still trying to land Jacksonville's Kendrick Norton, especially since he comes from one of the state's premier programs and one that Miami is trying to connect with. Although he's scheduled to visit Auburn this weekend, that trip is still up in the air. He released his top 5 earlier this week and Miami was on it. They're set to get a visit next weekend. He's been all over the place with his recruitment so it's tough to get a good read on him but the Canes are definitely in the mix and trying.
Austrian Robinson is one of the top defensive line prospects in New York this year and he's set to be on campus this weekend. At 6-foot-4 and 265 pounds, he's set to see Miami this weekend then Ole Miss next weekend. Maryland leads right now but Ohio State will likely get him if they offer him a spot in their class. Otherwise, the Canes will have this weekend to pluck him away from the Terps.
Miami is still looking to add more linebackers and one is visiting this weekend -- Saleem Braswell from New Jersey. At 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, Brightwell visited Missouri last month but is likely going to choose between Miami and Pitt, where he's scheduled to visit later this month.
Landing another cornerback or two is still a big need for Miami and two of their top targets are scheduled to be here this weekend. Marcus Lewis (Washington DC) has Miami in top group along with Kentucky and Washington State. The Canes appear to be in good shape but watch out for Texas, who is starting to make a strong late push for him. Speaking of Texas. the Longhorns have a commitment from one of the area's top prospects in Booker T Washington High standout Davante Davis. Despite the commitment, he still plans on seeing Miami this weekend and then Florida next weekend before making a final decision. It won't be easy flipping him, however.
