Coach D talks about the scrimmage

Read on to see what defensive coordinator Mark D'Onofrio was saying following the team's scrimmage on Saturday.

On how he grades the defense:
You’re trying to focus on indivudial guys. Certain guys are getting different looks with different units. When I turn on the tape I want to see everyone getting better. They get better by doing their jobs, competing at a high level, and finishing. When all 11 guys are doing that it’s good. It’s spring football and there will be mistakes but I’ll wait until I review the film.

On his calls today:
When we scrimmage with ones/twos, I don’t get a break in between series’. For two hours straight, I’m calling defenses. I’m making calls that I think we need to improve on. I call things that allow us to coach off the tape. Overall, I thought the first unit did a really nice job. They were locked in and played well. The second unit started slow but they finished better. That’s how I see it until I watch the film.

On battling the heat today:
Our guys are in good shape. Swasey and those guys do a great job. When you practice in this climate year round, our guys are used to it. For spring ball, our conditioning is good.

On missing Tracy Howard today:
We’re a little thin at corner. We have some guys coming in the fall. Tracy will be back soon. He had a little set back. Calvin (Heurtelou) has been out the whole spring so we saw some more of the younger guys there too. We look forward to getting Tracy back.

On not being able to hit the QBs:
They understand it we’re not going to hit Brad Kaaya. Stay away from the quarterback and lets go win some games.
