The Good, Bad & Ugly - 9/3/01

Miami opened the season with a very solid victory at Penn State. With the exception of a knee injury to Daryl Jones, the 'Canes escaped healthy and confident. Let's take a look at what went well, what didn't and what we have to look forward to in the coming weeks.

The Good

- Ken Dorsey: Dorsey looked every bit a Heisman candidate. Dorsey finished with a career high 344 yards passing and three touch down passes. The only blemish on his night was a bizarre interception that bounced off Kevin Beard's hands into the arms of a Penn state defender.

- Clinton Portis: What a way to celebrate your birthday! Clinton ran for 164 yards on only 17 carries. He showed excellent vision all night.

- Jeremy Shockey: Seven receptions for 84 yards doesn't stick out at you but it was the timing of his receptions that mattered. Jeremy was consistently coming up with first downs when we needed them. What makes his performance all the more impressive is that Penn State acknowledged that he was the key to the Miami offense and yet he still had no trouble getting open and coming up with the catches.

- Offensive Line: The equipment room can thank these guys for one less uniform to wash this week. There is no need for our #11 uniform to be washed:-) Dorsey was barely touched all game and the offensive line was dominant all night in both run and pass blocking. If this unit stays healthy it will be our best ever, period.

- Defensive Ends: Jerome McDougle and Andrew Williams are welcomed with open arms by 'Cane fans looking for pressure on the QB. Both were in the backfield consistently and were responsible for constantly pressuring the Penn State QB.

The Bad

- Penalties: 14 penalties for 120 yards is not good. Many of these are correctable and they need to be. In a closer game these numbers will hurt us.

- Dropped balls: Willis McGahee fumblded on the one yard line and Kevin Beard dropped a sure TD or else the score would have been very ugly. We need to tighted this area up and make sure we win the turnover battle.

The Ugly

- Injuries: Unfortunately we have lost WR Daryl Jones for a few weeks with a sprained MCL. Daryl's experience as a WR and punt returner is going to be tough to replace but now is the time for some of the younger players to step up.
