The most talented team in the land had a dominating season opener against Penn State in front of nearly 110,000 fans last Saturday night. I give the Canes the edge over Florida simply because it was just two games ago that UM manhandled the Gators on the field.
The Gators are led by an outstanding passing game on offense and the defense is on the brink of doing something special. They were impressive in the season opener.
I watched the Sooners against North Carolina two weeks ago and I no longer feel this is the best team in college football. Their quarterback will get better as the season goes on, but they still have some question marks before being considered No. 1 again this season.
4. Florida State
They struggled in the first quarter against Duke, trailing 6-0 heading into the second quarter, then the freshman quarterback took over and the FSU defense was back down to earth. Unlike many, I still feel this is a top 4 or 5 football team right now.
Led by an elite passing game, the Longhorns are loaded and they played well in their season opener against New Mexico State.
I think the Vols are better than most people think. They have an experienced quarterback, and one of the nation's best defenses. They have one more tuneup until their showdown at Florida.
The Huskers got their starting running back onto the field on Saturday and the running game looked much better. They'll be tested at home against Notre Dame this week, as the Irish have a lot more talent than TCU did.
8. Virginia Tech
Despite the loss of Lee Suggs, this is still an outstanding football team that plays one huge game all season, and that's at home against Miami in December.
9. Georgia Tech
Their defense has been stellar in their first two games, and quarterback George Godsey will get the offense rolling before they travel to FSU later this month.
They have a big time quarterback and they beat a pretty good Wisconsin team at home this past weekend.
