Tuesday Q&A with Mark D'Onofrio

Read on to see what defensive coordinator Mark D'Onofrio is saying four days before the team's season opener.

On getting Juwon Young back:
That’s up to the trainers and doctors. We don’t have anything to do with that. He’s been good in meetings. We are keeping him engaged and making sure he’s studying and he has been.

On depth behind Raphael Kirby at MLB:
We had to make some concessions by using Darrion there at times. Terry McCray made a lot of progress there. We moved Jamie Gordinier there halfway through camp which was tough on him but he made progress. You have great meetings. You prepare them. You quiz them. You question them. You’re in a race to get everybody better. That’s our mindset.

On being concerned with mental errors early on:
We scrimmaged last Saturday and it was more in line of a game pattern and it was good. We were good with that for the most part last year. The games we didn’t play well, those things showed up. Guys are now running the defense there. Darrion Owens is in his second year and can play three positions well. We have guys like that now. Rookies have work to do. They have to be mindful with time management. They have a bunch of things going on but they must know what’s going on.

On Trent Harris:
He’s the type of guy who does everything you ask of him. He benefitted coming here last January and he made the most of it. He’s been in the rotation since day one. They played a lot of football. They picked up right where they left off. They had good springs, good summers. They keep getting better and making plays.

On Harris improving his speed:
Yes. He’s improved his speed. What he does is an elite level is he does his job. When you have a guy who runs a 4.5 but cant play the defense it doesn’t matter. Trent does and is a really good player.
