UM Hoops Earns No. 3 Seed in NCAA Tournament

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes are back in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament for the first time since 2013 and the second time under head coach Jim Larrañaga.

No. 11 Miami (25-7, 13-5 ACC) received the No. 3 seed in the South Region, as announced on the CBS Selection Show Sunday evening. The Hurricanes will open play Thursday in Providence, R.I, against 14th-seeded Buffalo (20-14, 10-8 MAC).

The other teams in Miami’s pod are sixth-seeded Arizona (25-8, 12-6 P12) and either Vanderbilt (19-13, 11-7 SEC) or Wichita State (24-8, 16-2 MVC). The Commodores and Shockers are both No. 11 seeds and will meet in the First Four.

The No. 3 seed in the third-highest seed in Miami program history, behind only No. 2 seeds in both 2013 and 1999. This is the eighth all-time NCAA Tournament appearance for the Hurricanes, who have a 6-7 record.

Miami advanced to the Sweet 16 for the second time in its last NCAA Tournament appearance, defeating 15th-seeded Pacific and seventh-seeded Illinois in 2013.

For Larrañaga, a 1971 graduate of Providence College, the Hurricanes’ trip to the Dunkin’ Donuts Center will be a return to his alma mater.

Game times, television channels and announcer pairings will be released at a later time.
