UM Nearing Commitment

At 6-foot-3 1/2 and 250 pounds, Miami (Fla.) Killian standout tight end Dane Guthrie is glad August has finally arrived.

"We started practice and I'm ready," Guthrie said. "I worked a lot on conditioning over the summer, running a lot of 110s, starts, and stuff like that. My weight's down to around 249 now and I feel a lot quicker on my feet."

Guthrie, who will be playing defensive end as well this season, has opening day circled on his calendar.

"We get Edison the first week," he said of the team that beat Killian in its spring jamboree. "I didn't play in the last one so I'll definitely be ready for this one."

On the recruiting front, Guthrie already has a good idea of where he'll end up.

"I'm most likely going to UM," he said. "That's probably where I'll go but I haven't told the coaches yet about a commitment. They know I'm real interested."

Guthrie, whose teammates JR Bryant and Bobby Washington are already committed to the Hurricanes, is being recruited to play tight end. He took an unofficial visit to UM two weekends ago.

"I went out there just to see what was going on," he said. "I talked to Coach [Curtis] Johnson about things. He was telling me that if I'm a tight end then your best choice is UM. That's true too. Just look at the guys they've put in the pros lately and now Winslow will be next."

Guthrie talked about the recruiting situation at tight end for the Hurricanes.

"They said they need a few of them," he said. "I know there will probably be more than just me. From what I know, they have offered two others -- one from Arizona and [Calais Campbell]."

Guthrie said he plans on taking at least two official visits during the year, regardless of whether he's committed or not.

"I'll go to Auburn to see my boy Pat [Lee]," he said. "I'll see if I can go see a couple other ones too besides UM and Auburn."

Guthrie, who is also considering offers from Rutgers, Boston College, Auburn, and Iowa, said it's only a matter of time before he makes it official.

"I don't know when I'll officially [commit]," he said, "but I know that Miami's the place for me."
