WR Has UM Offer

Ever since Miami (Fla.) Northwestern standout wide receiver Khalil Jones tore opposing cornerbacks up at the University of Miami summer camp, he's been talked about as being one of the state's top wide receiver prospects. He certainly proved it while competing against guys like Cameron Colvin and Early Doucet.

While not mentioning a scholarship offer from the Hurricanes for the past several weeks, Jones has changed his tone.

"They been offered me," Jones said. "I was afraid I'd get in trouble if I mentioned it to somebody but I guess it's OK. Trevor's mentioned his. But yeah, I got one."

Jones said the Hurricanes are at the top of his list and might be close to a commitment.

"I'm not sure about that," he said. "It may happen soon. I've been trying to get to some more practices and meet with CJ and some of the coaches but I don't know their practice schedule. Plus, I don't know when the best time to call is."

Fortunately for Jones, he'll get a much better idea of what's going on starting on September 1 when college coaches are permitted to start calling prospects again.

"I'll talk to CJ more about everything when he starts calling," he said. "They know I'm real interested. I might go down there this Saturday and watch practice."

In the meantime, Jones is nursing a hip injury that he suffered during track season. It's starting to bother him again. That has caused him to miss a few practices, including one yesterday that I attended.

"I wouldn't even call it an injury," he said. "I'd say it's a basically to prevent an injury. I'm straight. I just wanted to rest it up so I'm 100-percent for the start of the season."

At 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, Jones also has offers from Michigan State, Rutgers, and South Florida. He's also being recruited by Florida State and Florida.
