Kaaya & Others Talk WVU

Read on to see what some of Miami's players were saying on Thursday as the team prepares to take on West Virginia in its bowl game.

Braxton Berrios, Jr., WR

On returning to football after a few weeks off…

“It’s nice getting back out here, getting on the field and being with everybody again.”

On the possibility of ending Miami’s bowl drought…

“I think we have turned over a lot of new leaves this year. I think we are heading in the right direction in a lot of different phases and as a football team, in general. To end that bowl streak of losses is another leaf that we must turn over.”

On what he looks forward to most about bowl preparation…

“As a team, we have a lot of seniors leaving. Obviously we want to win, we want to get better and want to take strides to make sure we are ready for the game, but really just enjoy everybody that’s here, to be honest. Regardless of who stays or who leaves, we have around 18 seniors and that’s going to be their last game as a Miami Hurricane. A lot of them, I’ve been with for three years so I’ve really enjoyed their company. It’s really enjoying each other right now.”

David Njoku, R-Soph., TE

On if he has made a decision about entering the NFL Draft early…

“No I haven’t, I am going to worry about that after the bowl game.”

On if practice is any different, preparing for a bowl game…

“I feel like it is more mentally difficult. You have so much more time for yourself, so you want to do what regular students do and have fun. But it is very important to stay focused. Work that much harder, because during this time off your body is going to get all lazy. You have to be mentally and physically focused and just take it day by day and you should be okay.”

On if guys were mentally and physically focused today…

“We started off strong, but obviously we have to do better. There is always room for improvement. I think we will be just fine.”

Thoughts on it being ten years since Miami won a bowl game…

“Hearing that, there aren’t really many positive thoughts towards that. That doesn’t sound right, we are Miami. That is a big deal, and we are trying to change that this year.”

If he is refreshed after having the week off…

“I feel good. Honestly, I have so much fun out on this field with my teammates; I call them brothers. Whenever I am on this field, I always feel focused and whenever I get focused my body is fine.”

Brad Kaaya, Jr., QB

On bowl practices…

“There’s no school right now, so it’s pretty much just all ball, film, lifting and conditioning.”

On what he hopes to get out of these practices…

“We just want to get ourselves in a good position to win and get in some good preparation to put ourselves in a good place leading up to the bowl game.”

On his future with the program…

“I’m just focusing in on this bowl game right now. I will probably figure things out the day after it ends. I’m just focused in on this game. We haven’t won a bowl game in 10 years, so that is a pretty big deal to this school. Right now, it’s all about beating West Virginia because they are really good football team, so I can’t be thinking about anything else other than their defense.”

On the advantages of bowl practices…

“There’s just more time to do stuff and more time for practice and more time to get reps in.”
