Players Talk Spring Practice: March 23

Read on to see what some of Miami's players were saying following Thursday's practice.

Zach McCloud, So., Linebacker

On the difference coming out here this spring in comparison to last year…
“We get to be more comfortable, because we are familiar with the calls and everything. We get a chance to pay attention to more of the details, the small things we couldn’t focus on as much last year.”

On who is working with him and pushing him during practice to get better…
“There is [junior linebacker] Charles Perry, [junior linebacker] Eddie Dunn and I. And then we have a guy coming in later in the summer. My biggest competitor is me. I try to beat myself. I look at the film every day, I look at the stat sheet and I try to make sure those numbers are going up and that the negative numbers are going down.”

On being a freshman starter with two other freshmen linebackers, and pushing each other this season to be even better…
“I mean, we got to that spot by already being pretty competitive. We have great competition around us, but again, for all three of us the biggest motivators are ourselves and the guys who played in the past. We have a standard to play towards, and we are trying to get to that standard. We are not there yet, but we will get there.”

On his goals this spring…
“Eliminate the mistakes. Right now, that is my goal. I can’t really get better at making big plays, I just have to learn my job and try to eliminate the small things that held me back before.”

Shaquille Quarterman, So., Linebacker

On the feeling to be back out on the practice field…
“It feels great to be back out here. We have been working since we got back from winter break. It is just exciting to be back out here bonding with the teammates and everything.”

On the difference coming out here this spring in comparison to last year…
“It’s a really big difference. First spring I didn’t know what to expect, I had just got here. I had to adjust to a lot. Now having the experience from last spring and the season I kind of feel like I know the guys. Especially with the freshman coming in, even though I may not be a senior, I still have to help them and give them insight on stuff and how we operate here.”

On if he feels more comfortable this spring than last year…
“Definitely this spring it is. Knowing the material, knowing the playbook more from last season and all of the time you put into it, it definitely feels like I can play more freely.”

On his goals this spring…
“As a unit, we just want to keep up to the standard that we decided to live by. We want to work hard, we want to keep up to the 86 gang. We have to work towards a national championship. As for myself, I just want to keep encouraging my teammates, keeping them on the right track and being a leader that a middle linebacker at the University of Miami should be. That is what I am focusing on.”

Ahmmon Richards, So., Wide Receiver

On the quarterbacks so far this spring…

“They all have improved and know the system pretty well. They all can throw and put the ball on the money.  They all have touch. It’s going to be a good competition.”

On how he challenges himself after having a freshman All-American season…

“Not being mediocre and coming out every day and trying to work to be better than last year. I felt like last year was okay. I mean it was a good season, but it just wasn’t what I wanted to have.”

On what he wants to improve most on…

“Get better at route running and finishing routes and staying up and not letting one guys tackle me. Just get in the end zone more.”
