Q&A with Shaq Quarterman

Read on to see what sophomore linebacker Shaquille Quarterman was saying following Tuesday's practice.

Shaquille Quarterman, So., Linebacker

On the scrimmage and how the defense did…

“I think we did well as a unit. We have some new guys out there. BJ [freshman linebacker Bradley Jennings, Jr.] for example, who may not know all the material right now in the play book, but we just told him to go out there and play confident and run around and make plays. And he did that. We had [freshman defensive lineman Jonathan] Garvin. Garvin had a nice sack, real technical with the hands. We did well. We did well for the first scrimmage.”

On who impressed him…

“I wasn’t looking at specific individuals. I was really just looking for everybody to come out. For all the time we have been practicing for that scrimmage, I wanted everybody to come out and show what they have worked on.  Whether it be working on bags, pass rush, anything that they have been working on, I just wanted to see it transfer to the scrimmage.”

On a spot overall on defense that needs to get better…

“I would say everywhere. Like coach has said, he just said it right now, ‘When we are really urgent, we are really good.’ So everybody has to focus on coming out, getting the crust out of their eyes and getting ready to be better every day. Because being great is being good every day. So we can’t take any days off, because you don’t feel like getting out of bed, this and that. We have to come prepared to work.”

On if it was enticing knowing the quarterbacks were live during the scrimmage…

“Very enticing. It was very, very exciting. It tested them just like it tested us. We had to learn how to stay in coverage when they scrambled and they had to learn how to scramble. It was a good measuring stick for us.”
