"I did really well at both of those camps," McConahie said. "The Florida camp, we had board drills and I lost in the semi-finals to the guy that won it (Brandon Luther, a non-UM prospect). It was a lot of fun though."
At 6-2 and 295 pounds, McConahie started his season with a strong performance two weeks ago, registering 10 tackles in a 49-17 win over Eau Gallie.
"I'm playing really well on defense," he said. "I haven't even played on offense yet because we got a different guy to play that spot and it helps keep me fresh on defense. But our center's injured this week so I'll play both ways (on Friday)."
On the recruiting front, the talented lineman has been communicating with several college coaches on a regular basis.
"Bill Miler from Florida was at our last game," he said. "I thought he was here to see Mike (Mangold) but I guess not (Mangold's nursing an injured foot). I've talked to Pittsburgh, East Carolina, South Florida, and I talked to Art Kehoe before the Florida game."
McConahie made the three hour trip to Miami along with teammate and best friend Mike Mangold.
"Coach Kehoe was telling me to keep working hard and keep plugging at it," he said. "He said they're still watching me."
McConahie said while the talk with Kehoe was exciting for him, Mangold got even better news.
"They told Mike that Coach Coker wanted to talk to him," he said. "So he talked to him and they said they're going to have real good news. Then on Sunday night, Coach Coker called and told him he has a scholarship to play there. Mike was pumped because he likes Miami a lot. Hopefully when they watch Mike later in the year, they'll see me because I'll be playing right next to him when he comes back."
Mangold is expected back by week six. I'll have an interview with him later in the week.
