LB High on UM

South Miami, Fla. middle linebacker Javier Estopinan is having a tremendous senior season thus far. At 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds, Estopinan has helped lead his team to a 2-1 start with 35 tackles, six for loss, and two caused fumbles.

"Our schedule is going to get real tough later in the season when we play teams like Killian and Norland and South Dade," he said. "I can't wait till we can play against Charlie Jones and Bobby Washington."

Estopinan, a full academic qualifier and a state champion wrestler as a junior, has been playing dinged up this season.

"I've been playing with a twisted ankle," he said. "It's sore but at least I'm playing on it. I don't want to have to miss any action. There's nothing I can do to help my team win standing on the sidelines."

Many project the talented linebacker to be a defensive end at the college level. He said he's thought about that.

"When I went to a summer camp in Canton, Ohio I got a chance to work out with the defensive ends," he said. "We were doing different drills and I was tearing those big offensive linemen up. I'd like to stay at linebacker because I'm in control of the defense and I know what everyone's doing. That's what I'd like to do for now but in the end, I'll do whatever the coaches want me to do in college."

Speaking of college, Estopinan has five schools on his mind at this time.

"I've only set up one official visit so far and that's Florida for November 28 for when they play Florida State," he said. "The rest, I don't have the dates for those. I know they'll be to Ohio State, Miami, Florida State, and N.C. State."

The standout linebacker has taken some unofficial visits so far this season.

"I've been to some of UM's games," he said. "The Florida game was crazy. The crowd was really loud and into the game and the game was very exciting."

Estopinan said he hears from each of his favorites on a weekly basis, including Miami.

"Miami's been calling each week, just checking up on things," he said. "They're the only one of my favorites that haven't told me I have an offer but I don't think it's a big deal. They want me to visit and everything and they know I'm here. They told me they want me, but they're just not sure what position yet. I'm definitely interested in Miami."

When told about the reports of him favoring the other programs on his list, he replied, "nah, they're all pretty even right now. How am I supposed to say without having taken any official visits? I'll know where I'm going after those."
