DB Favors UM

Miami (Fla.) Monsignor Pace standout defensive back Lovon Ponder has battled an ankle injury this season but is still enjoying a solid senior season.

"I was playing both ways before I got hurt," Ponder said. "Now I've just been playing defense. Teams never throw my way, though. I guess they learned not to throw at me last year. I have one pick right now."

Ponder, 6-0 and 190 pounds, is also a premier basketball player and also runs track. Those are other reasons why he's such a major prospect.

"I'm starting to narrow the field down some," he said. "I got a visit to N.C. State for December 5th. I'm gonna try taking them in December. I'm also gonna check out Miami, Florida State, and Georgia. I aint really sure on the fifth one right now."

Ponder said while he'll wait till after his visits to make a decision, he has a clear leader at this point.

"Most likely, I'll end up going to UM," he said. "They've always been on top for me. They're close to home, I like the situation there. I think I can fit in. UM is almost like a dream for me. They offered and now they're my top choice."

Just in case things dont work out at UM for Ponder, he has other options.

"I got some other choices," he said. "Florida State, Georgia, NC State, those guys have offered too but UM is where I need to be. I talk to Coach Stoops a lot and we talk about different things. They're losing both safeties because Sean will probably leave. I'll be able to compete with some of the younger safeties. It don't matter how many they have or get, I'll compete."

Ponder is a full academic qualifier.
