UM Gets Commitment

For the last several months, Wharton, Texas standout Kellen Heard has been thinking a lot about his college future. "It's been something on my mind for the last few months," Heard said. "I thought about a bunch of different places."

The talented defensive lineman, who stands 6-6 and 370 pounds (after weighing 368 on his UM visit), considered several Div 1 programs.

"I thought about (Texas) A&M but it wasn't for me," he said. "I thought about LSU, Arkansas, they weren't for me. But Miami was. I always liked them and when they offered, it made it easy."

As Heard mentioned before in an interview on this site, UM had something the other programs didn't.

"I am so sick and tired of losing that going to a place like Miami will take my mind off that," he said. "That was enough, I committed."

The talented lineman plays on both sides of the ball. He's lined up at defensive tackle, where he has a dozen sacks this season, and fullback. He wants to play defense.

"(My coach) might think I'll play offense but I'm a D-Lineman," he said. "Write it down, remember it. I'm a defensive lineman. I will play there."

Heard took his official visit to UM in early October and that was the clinching factor.

"I chilled with Orien (Harris) and (Vince) Wilfork and they told me how it is," he said. "I know I can fit in. I'm gonna be one of those guys one day."

Heard will now focus on getting a couple more points on the ACT in order to become a full qualifier. He became UM's eigth commitment of the year.
