RB Talks About Commitment

When Reserve (La.) East Saint John standout running back Derron Thomas was called into his coach's office on Friday, he didn't know what to expect. "My coach was on the phone with Larry Coker from Miami," Thomas said.

"My coach said he had good news and then handed the phone to me. That's when Coach Coker told me that they were offering me a scholarship. I was so happy."

Thomas, 5-11 and 185 pounds, said it didn't take long for him to make a final decision.

"Coach Coker then called me at my house today and I told him that I was ready to commit," he said. "He sounded happy, I was happy. I'm just glad they offered me. That's the University of Miami. They don't take just anyone, especially at running back. They must feel like I'm one of the best."

Thomas certainly believes that to be the case as well. He's having a senior season that helps prove it. Heading into the playoffs this week, Thomas has rushed for over 1,700 yards and 26 touchdowns. He also has 500+ receiving yards and three scores. Now he's excited to be a Hurricane.

"I know they're getting Charlie Jones too," he said. "It will be good having the competition. They're a little thin at running back right now so they're bringing us in to help get back on track and I know I'll be ready for the challenge. I just have to work really hard."

Thomas, a full academic qualifier, picked the Hurricanes over a host of others.

"I had a lot of offers but when Miami offered, I knew that's where I wanted to be," he said. "That's the only visit I'm gonna take. We're gonna set that up next week when they call."

The talented running back, who was told by Nebraska coaches that he's the No. 1 running back in the entire country. said he can't wait to become part of the Hurricane program.

"This is something I've thought about for a long time," he said. "To get this chance, I dont know what to say. Coach CJ kept telling me to be patient, be patient. It paid off. I know they were waiting on Adrian Peterson but I guess they know he's not coming or something. It doesn't matter how it happened, I just know that I'm a Hurricane now."

Thomas and his teammates begin the playoffs this Friday night.
