UM To Face Virginia Tech In Critical Match

The University of Miami soccer team will face its biggest challenge of the season this afternoon (3 p.m.) when they play Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, the Hurricanes final Northeast Division match of the season in the Big East.

The Hurricanes (8-5) are in need of a victory over the Hokies (6-7-2, 0-3) to secure a spot in the Big East Tournament, starting Nov. 3. If Miami defeats Virginia Tech they could enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed and host its first-ever quarterfinal match.

Should the Hurricanes fail to beat the Hokies, they could miss the tournament entirely. Miami would have to wait out the completion of several games in the Northeast Division to determine their status.

This will be the first ever meeting between the Hurricanes and the Hokies, a first-year member of the Big East conference. Virginia Tech has dropped all of their conference games to date, losing to Connecticut, Providence and Boston College.

Miami has also suffered defeats to UConn and Boston College, before defeating Providence earlier this season.

Miami has scored 29 goals this season, compared to 16 for the Hokies. UM junior Laura West leads the team with nine goals and three assists.

West is three goals shy from setting the UM record for goals in a season. The mark is currently held by Jenny Sanchez, who scored11 in 1998.

Virginia Tech is led by Kim Wyckoff with three goals.
