DE High on Hurricanes

Sarasota (Fla.) Booker defensive end Chris Zellner began catching the attention of college coaches in the spring. "We had a real good team and a lot of players we have are being recruited," Zellner said. "I was just trying to stand out."

It worked. At 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, Zellner finished a strong senior season and is now enjoying the holiday break.

"I've just been chillin, hanging out with friends lately," he said. "I have a busy month coming up with official visits. I went to Maryland already. It was cool. Me and my dad went there. I got Clemson (1/9), Ohio State (1/16), Tennessee (1/23), and Miami (1/30) next month."

The talented defensive end said he's not ready to name a favorite because of his limited knowledge on those programs in comparison to each other.

"I don't know a lot about them yet," he said. "Some of the coaches came by my house and talked to me about the school and stuff. Miami was supposed to come but I had to attend a funeral because of a death in the family so I wasn't able to meet with them."

However, Zellner did get good news from the Hurricanes coaches in recent weeks.

"Miami was the latest school to give me an offer," he said. "I now have offers from all of them."

The standout defender said one thing he likes about Miami is the way they rotate their defensive ends. He was asked for his thoughts on competition.

"The thing with Miami is they're recruiting a bunch of defensive ends but they also rotate a bunch of them during the games," he said. "If I'm good, I'm gonna see the field. I know they're gonna put a new set on the field all the time. The competition doesn't matter because the best ones will play."

Zellner is a full academic qualifier and remains friends with current UM defensive lineman Baraka Atkins.
