DB Ready For Second Trip

Miami (Fla.) Pace standout Lovon Ponder took his first official visit to N.C. State last month and is getting ready for his second one this weekend. "I'm going to Georgia this weekend," Ponder said. "It should be nice. They have been recruiting me all year and I like how successful they've been."

"I like the coaches. That'll be my second visit. Then I'm taking a week off before finishing my visits with Oklahoma (Jan. 23) and Miami (Jan. 30)."

At 6-0 and 180 pounds, Ponder is coming off a state football championship and is now playing basketball. He understands it's going to be a busy month.

"It hasn't gotten real bad yet but it's about to," he said. "I'm going to be real busy, with two long trips and one to UM. I hope they're all fun."

Ponder has been talking to UM defensive coordinator Randy Shannon ever since Mark Stoops left for Arizona.

"He's real cool, I like him," he said. "He's real straight up with you. He's just been telling me how much they want me and stuff like that. From down here (in south Florida), he's trying to get me, Trevor Ford, JR Bryant, and Anthony Reddick."

Despite having UM as his current favorite, Ponder said anything could happen between now and signing day.

"The reason I like UM so much is because they're close to home, I know their situation, I know some players, all that," he said. "I'm gonna check out those other schools and maybe someone can match up but right now it's UM. They're my last visit so I'll know by then if anyone's caught them or not. I'll probably wait till around signing day to tell people (of my decision)."

Ponder is a full academic qualifier.
