Thomas Excited About Future

Reserve (La.) East St. John standout running back Derron Thomas capped off an outstanding senior season on the football field recently and is now preparing for track season. "I've just been chillin and getting ready for track," Thomas said.

"I'm gonna do the 100, 4 by 1. I got a 10.7 last year so I'm hoping I'll be right near the top (of the state) this year. I'm ready."

Thomas, 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds, will be taking his official visit to UM next weekend. He said he continues to get major attention from the UM coaches.

"Things have been kinda the same lately," he said. "I talked to the head coach, the running backs coach, and my recruiting coach just the other day. Coach CJ's coming to my house real soon. The running backs coach said he will be here too sometime. They came twice already."

The talented running back is looking forward to his time at UM.

"It's me, Charlie Jones, and Bobby Washington if he makes it into school," he said. "All they got healthy right now coming back is Tyrone Moss. Frank Gore may return but he's still coming off another injury. They're moving Devin Hester to running back just for the spring. Then when we get there in the fall, one or two of us will probably get playing time. I'm going down in June and getting a head start. I wanna be ready because Coach Soldinger said the guy that's ready will play. I just gotta handle my business until then, keep working hard and keep getting faster."

Thomas had a chance to watch the Orange Bowl game between the Hurricanes and arch-rival Florida State.

"That was a good game," he said. "It was fun to watch. Tyrone Moss looked good but I think he can be better than that. I can't wait till I get a chance like that, playing in a big bowl game like that against a team like Florida State. That's what it's all about. I can't wait. Hopefully they'll get back into the title game."

Thomas, with a 3.5 core GPA and a 16 ACT score, is a full academic qualifer.
